Open letter to President Buhari

Cc: Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawunmi

Dear Sir, firstly, I want to congratulate you on your election as president of our great country, the most populous black nation on earth. I commend all your effort in trying to position our great country Nigeria where she rightfully belongs.

I am delighted you and your team are making sure all hands are on deck to make certain all your campaign promises are fulfilled to Nigerians. This notwithstanding, it is my hope that all necessary industries attainable in western countries to boost development of an economy are duly considered.

This brings me to the neglect of the importance of biochemistry to the socioeconomic development of Nigeria by the sociopolitical community. Nigerian biochemists are often thought of as “Biology or Chemistry” teachers.

Sir, if you wish for Nigeria to become an industrial hub for manufacturing, production or recycling of everyday usable goods ranging from textile, pharmaceuticals, nutrition, brewing, agriculture, biotechnology, etc, biochemistry should be very first on your list of armor.

Here are some applications of biochemistry which can be very useful to the development and economy of Nigeria:

  • Production of  biochemical which is useful in food and drink industry
  • Production of enzymes which are very essential in food, brewing, agriculture, laundry, pharmaceuticals industries.
  •  Forensic: with the help of database like BVN, Voter’s card, Sim registration, NIMC, driver’s license etc.  A Nigerian forensic biochemist can actually solve crime.
  • Production and utilization of natural compost as fertilizer
  •  Utilization of urban waste (recycling)
  • Clean up of environmental pollutants and hazardous chemicals (Petroleum sector)
  • Sport nutrition
  • Milk production
  • Yeast production (for brewing)
  • Sugar production
  • Production of medical enzymes useful in the diagnosis of cancer, bone disease, diabetes, liver disease etc
  • Confectioneries
  • Production of activated charcoal, etc.
·        Nigerian biochemists are more than just “Biology or Chemistry” teachers.
